This ON-LINE news letter is written by the students of the Conversational French class from Los Angeles Harbor College extension programs
The French is, “Soul French”, TO COMMUNICATE.
All Students write this news letter, from the heart, what they have learned in class. It is remarkable what can be learned in six weeks.

Conversational French Beginners
Introduction
This course is designed for students who have never studied French Language (total beginners) or who have studied it for a short while in school or somewhere else.
Objectives
The objectives of this course are to impart preliminary knowledge about the French grammar, French language and civilization.
At the end of the 6(six) week’s course, the student is expected to acquire the following skills:
*To understand simple words and expressions spoken slowly
*Read and understand common sentences in French
*Say a few words in French in a conversation related to simple day-to-day situations
*Ask question for obtaining basic information in every day’s situations
*Speak in simple sentences in French to describe himself or herself, or his or her immediate environment.
*Write very short answers, dialog and short postcard.
Course activities
Week 1 Alphabet, cognates with slight differences in spelling, numbers, to be
Greeting people, introducing yourself, spelling your name, indentifying people, giving your address and phone number. Telling the time.
Week 2 To have, the nouns, gender, articles
Talking about clothing and colors; getting information, talking about food and drinks.
Week 3 Future tense, to go, regular verbs,
Asking for a choice, expressing a desire, a necessity. Restaurant. Using the phone.
Week 4 Test! Pointing out people and choices (adjectives demonstrative), to be, to have
Where you should go, asking direction.
Week 5 Preposition, adverbs, review W1, W2, W3, basic sentence structure
Furniture, members of a family
Week 6 Review and reading of the “homework” of those who could write their 6 weeks experiences

-Students will develop skills to understand oral French, and to speak the language on their own.
-This course will provide basic information of French culture and civilization and about the historical relationship between USA and France, and the origin of the French community in California, for a better understanding.
-This course will open a window on the French culture through text materials, music, and the internet.
-Practice the language and the vocabulary needed within a French cultural context.
Method
This course will be taught in French, with very little English spoken, if possible.
Active participation of the students in class is required.
Oral practice of the French language is essential to become comfortable with it and the culture.
Oral participation will include: repeating, reading, conversations.
Students are expected to be talkative and take the lead in initiative conversation!!
This is not a course for extremely shy students; students have to participate as much as they can.
Homework
Students will prepare only if it is possible for them, an oral presentation on a French cultural topic, according to the topics found in the textbook, and the web site
